Sights in Northfield
First platted in 1856, Northfield was an agricultural community in its early days. Wheat and corn farms dotted the land with lumber and flour mills providing jobs in the town. Dairy and beef came in next, which later turned to soybean, corn, and hobs. Education became a major force for the city with two liberal arts colleges, and the motto, which states, “Cows, Colleges, and Contentment.” Today, you will find plenty of activities and attractions for a diverse audience.
- Carleton College Cowling Arboretum – This arboretum and nature preserve offers walking trails to be enjoyed in warm weather and for cross-country skiing during the winter.

- Norwegian-American Historical Association – Located on the St. Olaf campus, this association provides artifacts and documents of the early days of Northfield as it related to the early Norwegian settlers.
