Faribault Concerts in the Park

Who doesn’t love the sound of live music? A live concert, whether it is a well-known band, or a local band, still creates a festive atmosphere. Link it to the fair weather of summer and you have a great recipe for a fun event.

Faribault Concerts in the Park

Summer Concert Series

Recently Faribault Parks and Rec hosted their 134th season of summer concerts and the team at Harry Brown’s did its part to keep the concert series free as a sponsor to the event which boasted 11 weeks of music. The series provides free live music at the band shell every Thursday night and it is a great place for family and friends to gather with their community in support of the arts. In addition to the music, there were also three opportunities to support visual arts with a local artist and take some art classes.

The summer concerts featured music from several different music genres including contemporary pop, jazz, blues, Big Band, patriotic music, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s pop, soul, country, R&B, swing, bluegrass, and even a junior theater rendition of an animated movie featuring young actors from ages 15-19.

Each year, the summer concert series is kicked off at the beginning of the season, and it has been a great event for over 100 years. Harry Brown’s hopes to continue to contribute to the culture and arts of our fair city.

Central Park History

Central Park of Faribault was once prairie lands that were set aside for a public gathering place. In the beginning, this historic space had to undergo many changes, including replanting all of the 2.5-acres of block 16 in the original town plat to be purposed for special gatherings. The first attempt to turn the prairie land into a lush greenspace failed as several trees were dug up and replanted in the Central Park lot to make it into a shady park. Fortunately, in 1867 the local Fruit Growers Association held an indoor strawberry show to raise funds for the project and they donated the $38 towards a second attempt and the plans for Central Park took root.

Band Shell

After the initial failure to make the park come together, eventually it became established as Faribault’s first park and for the next 20 years the green space known as Central Park was a gathering place for the Faribault Community. In 1887, a tradition of a summer concert series began in Central Park and continued for the next several decades but in 1921 the City Council approved a plan to build a band stand that was finished in April of that year. Since then, for over 100 years Faribault Parks and Recreation has put on their free summer concert series at Faribault’s historic Central Park in the historic band shell stage, or Bandstand.
