Heavy-Duty Truck Service at Harry Brown's

When it comes to heavy-duty vehicles like the Chevy Silverado 5500, regular maintenance is important for peak performance. Heavy-duty vehicles are quite an investment, and they are designed to handle the heaviest of loads, but to make the most of your investment there are certain things you will want to do periodically to ensure your vehicle will last.

Maintenance Every 7,500 Miles

These first few things are perhaps among the most important maintenance step you can do to ensure your vehicle is performing at its peak. Oil and oil filter changes are perhaps the single most important maintenance steps you can do. Your engine oil keeps engine parts moving well and it extends the life of those parts and helps keep the engine cleaner and cooler.
Tire rotation equalizes wear on your tires, moving each wheel to the next position every rotation. Regular tire rotations help your tires last longer.

Annual Maintenance

Other maintenance needs should be performed annually to keep your vehicle running smoothly:
  • Wiper replacement should occur annually (or every 15,000 miles) to ensure that the wipers are doing their job, so your field of vision is clear when it rains or snows.
  • Change 4x2 front axle wheel bearing oil (including synthetic) to keep wheels rolling along smoothly.
  • Change 4x4 front axle wheel bearing grease (including synthetic) same as wheel bearing oil.
  • Change rear axle oil (vocational applications) to keep drive train healthy and wheels moving properly.

Bi-Annual Maintenance (Every Other Year)

The following maintenance should be performed every other year:
  • Replacing passenger compartment air filters (or every 22,500 miles).
  • Replace fuel filter (or every 22,500 miles).
  • Replace brake fluid (or every 97,500 miles).

Other Timed Maintenance

Other maintenance needs that should take place are as follows:
  • Every four years, replace engine air cleaner.
  • Every five Years, drain and fill engine cooling system.
  • Every seven years, replace air conditioning desiccant.

Other Mileage-Based Maintenance

Some maintenance should be performed according to mileage on the vehicle, which include:
  • Re-torque front and rear axle U-bolt nuts every 37,500 miles.
  • Change transfer case fluid, if equipped with 4WD.
  • Change automatic transmission fluid and filter.
  • At 90,000 miles, inspect rear axle wheel ends for leaks, lube level/condition, and check end play with dial indicator. Change power steering fluid and filter.

Other Maintenance Concerns

Be sure you also perform regular maintenance on the wheel alignment by having a wheel alignment service if you replace your tires or any suspension parts, have an accident, hit a curb or a road obstacle.
Batteries should be serviced regularly as well. When you have oil changed, have battery checked for problems and for charge capacity because over time your capacity will wear down just from regular use.
Maintain optimum performance by having your engine fluids checked regularly and topped off if needed.
Hoses are another component that should be checked regularly. Check your hoses for leaks, blisters, softness, and cracks.
